How many miles does an EV battery last?

Most modern packs are on track to keep roughly 75% to 90% of their capacity after 8 years, depending on charging habits (Geotab). Many will keep working well past 200,000 miles. Individual high-mileage cars, like the Bolt above, have gone past 300,000 miles on one pack, but that's one example, not a guarantee.

How much does an EV battery replacement cost?

It varies widely by model and whether the pack is new, remanufactured or used. In the Bolt case, a used pack cost the shop $1,800 and would run a consumer about $2,500 to $3,000 by the shop's estimate. New packs for larger EVs cost far more. Does Arizona heat ruin EV batteries?

No, but it does speed up wear a bit. Geotab measured about 0.4 points a year of extra capacity loss in hot climates. Park in shade or a garage when you can, keep the car plugged in during summer so the thermal system can run, and don't let it sit at 100% for days.

Is DC fast charging bad for my battery?

Occasional fast charging is fine. Using it for more than about 12% of your charging, especially above 100 kW, roughly doubled yearly degradation in Geotab's data (3.0% vs 1.5%).

Should I worry about buying a used EV because of the battery?

Not if you check it. Outside of recalls, replacements are rare (Recurrent), so get a battery health report, confirm warranty coverage and pay for the range the car has today.
