What Happened to the Federal EV Tax Credit?

The $7,500 federal clean vehicle tax credit ended September 30, 2025 under the One Big Beautiful Bill Act. The $4,000 used EV credit also expired. Every vehicle on this list reflects $0 federal credit.

One credit survives: the 30C home charger tax credit (30% of installation cost, up to $1,000) is active through June 30, 2026. Install a Level 2 charger before that date and claim it on your 2026 tax return.

Many automakers responded to the credit expiration with $7,500-$10,000 dealer discount programs. Ask your dealer about current manufacturer incentives before signing any purchase agreement.

Frequently Asked Questions

What is the cheapest new EV in 2026?

The Toyota bZ4X starts at $34,900 and the Chevrolet Equinox EV at $34,995 are the most affordable options on this list. Both offer over 230 miles of range. The Equinox EV is assembled in Michigan, which matters for some state incentive programs.

Is there still a federal EV tax credit?

No. The $7,500 federal EV tax credit expired September 30, 2025. State incentives are now the primary savings tool, ranging from $0 to $12,000+ depending on your state and income level. Check our State Incentive Tracker for what is available in your state.

Which 2026 EV has the longest range?

The Lucid Air Grand Touring AWD leads all production EVs at 480 miles EPA-rated. The Lucid Air Pure hits 420 miles. Among more affordable options, the Tesla Model 3 Premium reaches 363 miles and the Hyundai IONIQ 6 hits 361 miles.

Do import tariffs affect these prices?

Yes, for non-US-assembled models. The Toyota bZ4X, Hyundai IONIQ 6 (South Korea), Kia EV6 (South Korea), Nissan ARIYA (Japan), and Ford Mustang Mach-E (Mexico) all have tariff exposure. Tesla, Rivian, Chevrolet, Cadillac, and Lucid assemble in the US and are largely insulated.

Which EV is the best value right now?

The Chevrolet Equinox EV (319 miles, $34,995, US-assembled) and Tesla Model 3 Premium (363 miles, $38,990, US-assembled) consistently rank as top value picks. For trucks, the Rivian R1T ($48,490, 289 miles) is the benchmark.
